A friend has offered a matching No 4 Mk1 to me with a 1942 date. The seriel #K65XX has me confused a bit. Is this a BSA Shirley?

I know with some authority that Maltby serial numbers start with a 1 after a letter or two, AB12345. Fazakerley starts with a 2  after letters, BC23456 and BSA Shirley starts with a 3 after letters, CD34567.
Savage would look like 73C2642 and Long Branch would look like 15L1885.
It sounds as if your rifle was scrubbed and re-serialized...

A single or double letter followed by 4 numbers on a 1941-1943 dated rifle is most likely BSA, if it has not had its serial number changed in service.  BSA did not start the single letter followed by 3 until 1944.  However a "few" late 1943 dated rifles with and without a letter and 3 have been noted which appear to be initially rejected bodies that were repaired and reinserted into production.

Look on P. 25 of "For Collector's Only Volume 2" by Stratton, it has all the prefixes and number ranges for the No. 4 rifle.  Yes, your rifle falls within the Shirley range.
