There are various other bits of metal sticking out of the wall as well.
 I suspect it was probably just to hang a net of hay for the horses. 
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

After more than two months I feel that we could do with another change! Not an Enfield, but a British long-reach carbine with its bayonet. A Jacobs Rifle and sighted up to 2,000 yards!

Pull the trigger, thrust blade... steel and lead probably hit the target at the same time! Be tough to turn around in doorways!

Compared to a Martini Henry with a similar bayonet.  Designed for for those equipped with the carbines to withstand a cavalry charge.

Actually, maybe the rear sight is calibrated for 75 yards when all the way up!
