Boatail will provide a flatter trajectory over long distances. The down side of using a boatail is they will erode the chamber throat and barrel at a faster rate then flat-based projectiles.

I think you're going to find that the boattail flat base question my give you some contradictory responses. With Enfields its a question of individual rifle preferences, but there are some common grounds for suggestion in general. Things like individual bore diameter (got to slug the bore), number of lands/groves in the rifling, chamber, leade & throat dimensions all play into the overall picture.

Generally speaking though 2-groove don't like boattails as much as other bores.

Personally I like the slightly lighter 150GR bullets as I can run them with less charge weight & that adds up over a long day's shooting.

What range will you be shooting at?

For short range I use the Hornady150 grain Spire Point  on 22-23 grains of SR4759 (Anemic but accurate)
For long range  either salvaged bullets from Mk VII ball ammo or the 180 Pointed Sierra on 38.5 grains of Varget.  This is close to max you might what to drop it a grain or two first.
Sorry for the grain useage but while I am totaly metric at work I still use grains when it come to reloading
Have a Nice Day
If already having a nice day please disregard

Take a look at the "match reloading thread" I posted in this forum.
There's a bunch of info in there including targets & chronograph data.

My "MkVII Equivalent" is:

Remington brass (2.200")
CCI 200 Primer
42.0 gr of ReLoder 15
Sierra 174 gr BTHP

It's a bit faster than the spec by about 35fps, but is within the pressure limits of the One True Rifle.
No4 MkI*, Savage 1943,
FTR (F) 1954 Mk1/3
No4 Mk2 ROF(F) 5/50
No2A1 RFI 1966

For my Two groove Savage I use the .312 150 Grain Hornady over 43.5 grains of 4320, sub MOA out to three hundred yards.

If a bore is a close fit to bullet diameter Boat tails won't cause much if any increase in erosion, but Enfield bores are seldom a close fit to the standard .311 and .312 bullets.
I have an exceptionally tight .311 bore No.1 MkIII with 1815 markings and excellent bore , I plan to try the SMK .311 in it when I get access to longer ranges of 600 yards or better later on.

(The owner of the property I used to use died several month back, and the heirs haven't settled the estate yet, the land is worth tens of millions so everyone got lawyered up double quick. )

Some get good results using .312 boat tail bullets in .313-.314 bores.

I've used .3125 147 gr steel core boat tail bullets pulled from old 7.62X54 with excellent results in my two groove savage, Using the same 43.5 gr load. but most 7.62X54 pull down bullets advertised are smaller in diameter.

I wish someone would bring out a 174 grain flat base balistic tip bullet in .312, that would be as close as you can get to the MKVII bullet using best modern bullet construction techniques.
Use of a boat tail bullet is closer to the Mk8Z cartridge, with the trajectory and blowby problems these loads had in the looser bore sizes.

Bruce Bertram (of Bertrams Brass fame) has started making 303 pills. The projectiles are 174gn flat base soft points. The soft point is actually rather small. I tried some over a charge of AR2209 (46gn) through both my 1918 and 1942 No1 MkIII's. The older girl wasn't too happy with them whereas the WWII rig shot a slightly tighter group. I am going to make up some more loads at 47 & 48gn loadings. Both will be heavily compressed loads, but as per listed max loads in the ADI list.
I am waiting on the LGS to get more AR2208 in so I can try the same pills over this powder. I currently use Highland 174gn FMJBT over a mild-ish AR2208 load which the WWI girl loves. But some ranges won't allow FMJ pills ?????. So I have to have an alternative non-FMJ load to use. Plus to avoid dicking around with sights I will use another 303.
Have also used the 123gn SP pills pulled from 7.62x39 cases. These pills shoot very well out to 300M over a load of AR2206. Have a heap of these pills and now use them mainly for plinking as I scored 1000 Highland 174gn pills in the last shipment my LGS managed to get.
