Now that I have time on my hands (Funny I seem to be busier now than when I was working for myself) I've developed the urge to complete a collection of .303 convertions ! I've got a 25-303&270 -303 .Which leaves a .22-303 (it would have to be a Churches ) 243-303 (I know where I can lay my hands on one of those ) & a 35-303 ! I might just for the Hell of it make up a 7.7x 54 (303 shorterned by 1/8 of a inch  2mm or two threads cut from the end of the chamber !) Why you may ask ???? ..................Cause I can Big%20smile

How about 8mm-303? Should be a pretty straightforward project to bore out and re-rifle it.
Or a ~.401/.303! A straight walled case...guess it would have to be a bit shorter to work.

My Old Man played round with a 303-8mm ,as well as a 303-6.5  for some years ,but the concept never grew on me . I have reformed Brass from 303 cases to make up 410 rounds for my lads .410 single barrel which he uses in Cowboy single action !

Howdy Dave!

Long time!

About your pops 303-6.5....

That is one of THOSE setups I've been thinking about for some time now.
What can you tell me about what it was like to shoot or even reload?
And what barrel length was it traveling down if you remember?

If you recall we spoke of the 303 Epps here some months back...
I'm still trying to get around to having one set up for myself as an improved load for extra long range targets(1000+meter) And it's that case spec I was thinking of necking down to 6.5(.264WinMag), again due to it's known superior low drag & high co-efficiency to produce a serious flat shooting 600 to 800+meter tack hammer! (specifically mated to 28 to 30 inch custom bull barrels in both cases)

P.S.>>>
I have finally started into getting CNC and machinist experience that I will be translating into a custom barrel and CNC parts business. Any idea's for custom CNC items for our old faithful friend Lee Enfield?
(thats a question for everyone!!!)

1) A heavier barrel. With a SAAMI-spec chamber. Say 1/8" wider, so one can still use the military stock.

2) A .303 chambering with a .308 bore: .308 is both cheaper and easier to find these days.

3) A detachable scope mount similar (if not an outright copy Big%20smile) to the military unit.

4) A magazine that will feed .303 Epps/Improved cartridges reliably.

I could think of more, but it's dinner time!

The .303 savage was a .308 bore so theres a start ! A selection of barrel lengths say 18 to 30 inch & of course a heavy barrel !

As for the 6.5 -303 .the Old man never had any great success with it ! He dosen't have any of the Data he used (I rang him today & picked his brains )

Hey Dave!

Did dad mention the barrel length on the 6.5-303?

There has been a long known issue with any 6.5\.264 WinMag related to barrel length and powder burn rates. For some reason after Winchester introduced the .264WinMag, they ended up selling the greatest majority of them with barrels between 24 & 26 inches because most folk thought that barrels on excess of 26 inches were a waist of time and a encumberence they were not willing to put up with for hunting. This caused it to under perform because it was originally spec'ed to a 28 inch barrel.

To make matters worse.
Those who owned them with the shorter barrels and reloaded their own tried to use faster burning powers to reach those spec. All that did was cause premature barrel burnout.

The fact was... The correct combo was a 28+ inch barrel mated to slower burning powders. A company in the US produced serious monster improved .264 round threw a 30 inch barrel. I don't have those spec's anymore, but it was a serious long range flat shooting combo to 700 yards.

I figure mating a 6.5 ~ 180+ grain projectile to a 303 Epps(improved) cartridge and a compatible slowish powder to really make it something to write home about.

This is the one I dream of playing around with.
Hopefully it will be the one I do right after I get to doing a 303 Epps conversion on my long awaited Longbranch conversion.

Cheers Dave!

P.S.>>>
Oh I  wish I had more time to come here  and hang with you guys!

Having worked with the 7.5 Swiss cartridge, I would seriously consider re-barreling to that if I was going to use anything different from the old .303 British.
