A friend of mine is selling one of these in .223 late model, synthetic stock, silver finished (not sure of correct term her)   Its in first class order, spare mags various x3.

I shot it today obviously not set up for me as I'm a lefty, but once I made allowances it grouped pretty well, this was off a bipod and scoped up, 200 yds.

Now here in the UK this is a straight pull not allowed semis, I was surprised at the trigger it was quite sweet, in fact I was pretty impressed with it full stop.

Whats the general opinion of these little rifles?

I didn't have any intention of buying it, however after today seriously considering it.

Experiences of ownership/opinions appreciated.

"Silver finished" is probably stainless steel.
The Ruger Mini-14 and Mini-30 rifles are very good utility carbines. They are also pathologically trashed by the AR types (so ignore them). I've found them to be good shooters. They generally can shoot two inch groups at 100 yards with decent ammo and are extremely reliable (operating semi-automatically). The Mini-30 (in 7.62x39mm) is a good deer rifle, able to do anything the .30-30 can out to 150 yards at least. Beyond 150 yards it will out-perform the .30-30 with pointed bullets, while the 30-30 is pretty much constrained to flat tip bullets. This is with both rifles using 150gr bullets.

Yes, stainless  - blank moment.

I was getting about a 3" group at 200yds, using my mate's home loads - H335 powder, but can' t remember exact load details.  He did say he was told that a heavier bullet gave better results, but had found the opposite in his experience.

I quite like it, and see it as something different.

i think they are fine rifles, plenty accurate especially the newer ones. If the price is right and you like it, go for it, otherwise since its not semi auto a good boltgun would be more accurate and user friendly IMO

Anyone know what year they improved the barrel?  The one mentioned was made in 2001 according to the manual.

Shot it a few weeks back and got x6 bulls, the other x4 just outside the bull, range 200 metres - on a bipod. The guy selling it has experimented a fair bit with home loads, and the aforementioned with 60grain Sierra Matchkings.  I can't remember what powder he is using though.
Likely buy it next month..

I have a Blued Version in a Ranch Rilfe chambered in .223. Very nice rifle. I have heard the Mini 30 in the 7.62X39 shoots well too.
