Glycerine. The stuff we used to put in the kids bubble bottle to blow really big bubbles after they dip the ring into it! It is an amazing natural lubricant!

Make sure you get it ALL off, some old rubbers don't react well to modern petrochemicals!

I've had good luck with a rattle can. The trick, in my opinion, is like painting a car. It's all in the metal prep. Once you start painting, patience is the key. Several light coats. My first coat you can probably see more steel than paint! Allow paint to dry between coats. Painting a round object is tough, hang it from a wire and walk around. I also make sure to spray the second or third coat up/down. It always amazes me on how clear stampings turn out.

I smeared wheel bearing grease all over it. That just made it slightly better.

I had to sand off the clear coat and then go over it with steel wool. The hardest part was trying to put the rubber back into the frame.

Right from the can and then let it set on my patio for the day to dry.

I have a question for the OP.....did you spray the metal parts right from the rattle can or did you use an air brush sprayer? It looks so uniform without drips.

I own four of these rifles but one of them has a plastic stock so while I am waiting for a reproduction wooden stock I think I’ll give that rifle the same treatment as you have done. I have it on solid authority that repro stocks will be available by this summer.

I finished cleaning up the bayonet and understand now,as to why the guy just gave it to me.
It is a reproduction. It's pretty and I definitely am not going to complain about it. It fits, looks good on the rifle, and I opened some mail with it today.

I like the contrast in colour from the hardware to the peep site!

I'd be careful with that flash hider it it really is aluminum! Remember the old Williams "AlumaBomb" receivers?

Other than that nice job! If you wanted to knock the shine back a bit you could scrub it with some Hessian (sacking) to matte the finish.
