Went to the range this morning. 0700 hours, 50°, no clouds and winds NNE 8 mph. The rifle used is my No4Mk1* Long Branch with a baby Hubble Telescope. It was noted that my dispersed shots were stringing laterally as well.
I shot 20 rounds down range onto a Shoot N See target first to get the barrel hot. Taped up two SR-1 targets at 200 yards and got to work. The first target showed a spread of 3 1/4" x 4 3/4" with 7 shots in the 10 ring and 8 shots in the 9 ring. Cease fire was called and there was a wait of ten minutes before live fire resumed. The second target would have scored better except I got one in the 8 ring. That being said I ended up with 2 in the X ring, 8 in the 10 ring, 4 in the 9 ring, and 1in the 8 ring with a spread of 2 1/2" x 5 3/4". I do not know how score these, I just know that I can cover both 15 shot groups with my hand...

Goosic, you are making this very challenging on yourself. The SR-1 Target is for 100 yards, it is reduced in size from the Military SR Target used at 200 yards.
Based on your group size, you would have all shots within the 10 ring, and many of those in the X ring.
The SR target for 200 yards has a 7 inch 10 ring and a 3 inch X ring. |

I am learning here britrifles. How would you score it please. That is not daylight. Flood lights were lighting the range because the sun was not out yet. I had a Shoot N See taped next to the actual target as a reference point using the horizontal line of the crosshairs...

The scoring method counts the total hits within each ring, an X is scored as a 10, but the total number of 10’s that are within the X ring is identified with adding a hyphen and the number of x’s after the numerical score.
So, for example, if you had 9 shots within the 10 ring and 5 of those are in the X ring, and one shot in the 9 ring, that score is represented by 99-5x. Looks like on your first target, you had 8 in the 10 ring and 7 in the 9 ring (using the method that if bullet hole touches or breaks the score ring, the hit is counted as the value of that score ring. So your score is that is 143-0x. Once you get set up, post the SR-1 target at 100 yards, and take 10 shots. And we will score that target.

In your opinion britrifles, are these acceptable groupings at a 200 yard distance?

Yes, the groups are 2 to 3 MOA, which is well within the acceptable accuracy of the No. 4 rifle. But, I think you have done better with this rifle before. IIRC, I’ve seen target pics you have posted with groups that are 1 MOA or better. You may not have held a consistent elevation sight picture because of the low light conditions you were shooting in. On this type of military bullseye target using a scope, some shooters like to hold the horizontal cross hair on either the top edge or bottom edge of the 9 ring, the black reticule over black bull may be hard to distinguish. Although with that high power scope, I suspect you can see the individual score rings on the target.
I’ve attempted numerous times to score 100-10x for ten consecutive shots on the SR target at 200 yards prone with the service sight, or PH 5C sight. So far, it’s eluded me, but I’ve got 100-9x several times. Perhaps someone on the forum will do it on our virtual match. |

Something was off today. The shots were stringing laterally. Taking the hand guards off revealed that I had an issue with the muzzle bedding. It has been rectified and I will try again at a later date...
