I went out today with a very good friend who had some Reds to cull and ionvited me along to shoot with him. The day started quite miserably with rain and mist for just about all of the 100 mile plus journey to where we would be culling but thankfully it dried up for when we were ready to start. The plan was for us to take out up to a dozen p***kets and any lame or "scrawny" looking animals from this farmed herd taking only head shots so as not to cause any meat damage - This friend of mine has had me out culling with him before and knows that I am more than capable of taking clean head shots and also knows that if I have any doubts I will not shoot. The two of us were shooting off the top of a huge 4X4 which gave us a great vantage point but near enough smashed our ribs whenever we hit a bump or rut while travelling across the fields. We would tap on the roof whenever we wanted the driver to stop the vehicle to stop for us to take a shot.
All told we shot exactly a dozen beasts with me taking 5 for 5 shots at ranges from about 100 yards out to 150 yards.
Attached are photos of two of the beasts that I shot. The first is just the head as I was a little too late for as the lads had taken the head off before I realised.  The second photo is the biggest animal of the day which also fell to me - To help put the size into perspective the beast is in the large front bucket of a JCB! On close examination of the heads from the animals that I shot the ammunition that I loaded for today with Hornady 150g Spire Points certainly does a heck of a lot of damage - There was a heck of a lot of internal damage to the skulls, which is a testimony to the power of the .303 Enfield!
All in all a good day was had by all and I think I can safely say that my Lee Enfield is "well and trully blooded" - He has to go back some time next week and shoot somewhere around 40 odd  more beasts so I am hoping that I am going to be available for that too as I already have the invite.

Are you able to stuff the heads..or would you want to?
Do the racks get much bigger? To me, it looks like these deer have "beards"..is that right?
How much would your species weigh?
Your lucky you can hunt from atop a vehicle. Here-you lose everything if you get caught doin that. Your in deep do-do if they find you SITTING on your ATV with a loaded weapon!

Yes Hoadie the "racks" get much bigger than that, those are only p***kets - (Edit - Sorry mods, i didn't realise that a swear filter was going to pick up on that) - Another name for them which is sometimes used "spikers". An adult Red Stag with a full set of antlers is really something to see and the heads are much prized - Here's a link to a slide show of some of the deer that I have photographed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_UNfTPkU8k 
A stag in full antler will often look like he has a full beard or what looks like a mane down his throat towards his chest. Here is another link to a web site that I designed and did the photography for which belongs to the friend that I was shooting with today - Have a look at the "Deer Park Photo Gallery" page and you will see some magnificent deer carrying full antlers. I should add that what this chap doesn't know about deer really is not worth knowing and he has spent a great deal of time teaching me all about "Deer Management", something that I feel greatly indebted to him for!

As for the shooting from the top of a vehicle, that was the onlt way that we could get any sort of a safe backstop as the land was quite flat, and the deer were farmed which meant that we were able to get away with it quite legally - There are different laws for farmed deer and naturally wild animals.
These were relatively small and young animals and only weighed around 130 pounds max (Gutted and without their heads or feet).
The biggest stag I have shot took 6 strong ment to lift it onto the back of a trailer and when skinned and gutted with the head and lower legs removed and hung up was still nearly seven feet from its hock joints to the neck.

I wouldn't imagine there would be all that much of a difference in taste. I guess a lot would depend on how you cooked it or maybe even how long it had been hung for!
I have to say that I'm not too keen on hanging my deer, I'm getting too old for chasing those deer around the fields with a lassoo nowadays, it's much easier to shoot them.WinkLOLWink

Its primarily dependant on diet. Manitoulin Island Whitetails taste different than regular northwoods deer, here. Again-diet being the main factor.
Just like bear taste relly good-if there isn't any landfill dumps around. If he's been around a dump, may as well forget it.(You are what you eat)

Hoadie-  Are the Manitoulin Whitetails generally thought of as tasting better or worse than the mainland deer?  Just curious.  Here in Michigan, it's accepted fact that southern farming country deer taste better than those shot further north, although I could never taste the difference between the two.  I have had a couple of bucks that were heavily into the rut that were quite rank...they were destined for sausage from the start.
