So this is my new toy.
Not really happy with the 1/8" gap in front of the safety.

So the rear sight goes out to 20. I am guessing that is not 2000 yards - so what does it stand for?

Have not shot it yet. trying to arrange a time to get to the range.

looks to be a sported no 1 , started life as a mkIII but it has been to india , the FR is their refurb mark , unfortunately they scrub a lot of critical info , my eyes are not so good anymore but i think i see a 2C prefix , if so , it was a savage made rifle but others will add their thoughts and correct if i am wrong ,

take a look o the back of the ladder of the back sight - it may give us something , the rear sight is a mkIII* fixed version ,

Savage didn't make  No 1s only No 4s   The other side of the  Butt socket (the band like thing that connects the fore stock and the rear stock)  might have some markings that would help.

Howdy from Phoenix  Arizona.
It is a No1MkIII* refurbished in 1944. The BNP and the .303  2.222" 18.5 Tons per □" on the right side of the barrel is just an indicator that it was placed out of service and sold into the civilian market.  The gap between the butt socket and the forestock is one of those things you are going to have to live with because of the ATI stock. The barrel still looks like the original length so if in time you want to restore it to its original form, that should not be an issue. Have fun with it now though.
Side Note. That 20 on the sight does in fact mean 2000 yards...

Morning B-Bikes,
I think it was made in Ishapore, as the proofs are Ishapore.

As SW28 said, Savage didn't make No 1 Mk 111's.
A photo of the other side of the butt socket would tell us a lot, but V likely Ishapore.

Is this the correct magazine? For the life of me it will not release.
What is the ring for?

Your magazine is for a No4 not a No1 rifle which is why it doesn't fit. What you need is the one on the right of this pic you have the one on the left.
I believe the sight at least is Indian, possibly the whole rifle is because of the matching numbers. I say this because of the rear sight's 2,000 yd max range marking which was a uniquely Indian thing intended purely for harassing fire. There's no definitive way to tell if its a converted to Indian spec British rifle or a native Indian made one. The stock rear face could be shimmed to butt up against the front of the butt socket, but its kind of a feature of the synthetic ATI stocks.

The ring is a hang over from earlier designs, but was retained as a tie down point for the laces on a canvas action cover.

That is a #4/MK1 magazine serial numbered as a Long Branch made example.

Well I finally got a chance to shoot the rifle today.
150gr PPU ammo
50 yards bulls eyes with the rear sight at 300 yard setting.
Will have to shoot it at 100 next time to see how that changes.
Bullet went clean through a 1/2" plate.
