More on Australia: it's refreshing to see a country that understands the need to defend itself from Chinese expansionism. Australia has committed to double its defense spending over the next 9 years so as to provide a credible deterrence to China.

Suppose the SHTF and the world is at war again. Canada could have all it's spare parts and consumables replaced very quickly from America's vast and secure armament factories next door or Canada could get its equipment via a long, tenuous supply line from northern Europe's vulnerable factories. Hubris should not interfere with a country's security.

it is worth considering , i realize that trump has irritated the canadians with his talk of annexation and reciprocal tariffs , but there is a simple fix , remove their tariffs and trump will remove ours , side with europe and worse yet the chibese and there will be reproduction's from that too , we have been good neighbors in the past ....yes some bumps in the road , thats what we need to remain - its in both ur interest ,

A Sq: Under the NAFTA / CUSMA agreements (the 2nd round re-negotiated by Trump) pretty much everything was tariff free.(As long as it originated in USA or Mex.)
Many other countries did not enjoy "preferred trading" status. The tariffs came about when Trump implimented them. So why would Canada remove their counter-tariffs first? Get Trump to remove his & everything should be good.(Well, not quite everything - we're still saddled with a Liberal "leader" named Carnage Carney. & all the trouble that goes with it!

Its a game he plays. Come up with a terrible first offer. Work it till it busts. Now make a slightly less ridiculous second offer. The other party negotiates that down. You accept. The Other party is pleased they got you to do the deal on their terms. You walk away smiling because its 15% more than you actually wanted! ![]() ![]() |

Are you reffering to dairy?
Most poultry consumed in Ontario is imported from U.S...as is pork & beef. No tariff there. No tariff on seafood (traded in U.S $ - shoot ourselves in the foot there!) Vegetables aren't tariffed. I'd like to see the list. I may find it educational. |

Canadians got snookered this past election. Carney has taken the wheel of a sinking ship with know plan to right it except to spend more. We have one way to get out of this but the Liberals would rather let Canada die. Oil and gas. We got it, the world needs it. Actually, my wife and I have started pondering moving the family to Alberta. They'll be an independent entity long before Canada goes down the drain.

yes lets start with dairy -
butter at 313+% other items as well and some as high as that or just under , peanut butter at 295% chicken cuts at 295% chicken eggs at at 241% turkey cuts at 238% barley at 04..5% beef at 25.5% wheat seed at 41% wheat products at 78.5% sugar at 265% those are outrageous and there is a long list , trump is simply saying fair trade is fair , get rid of your tariffs we drom purs , the playing field has not been levcel for a long time if ever , he wants it to be fair and i dont think he is out of line , BTW , im no farmer and i have no dog in that fight but i cannot see anything wrong with trumps thinking on fair trade i get the protective nature of your government for certain sectors - ours [here in this state] do the same but our taxes subsidize that , not tariffs , i think itsa wrong and i object but ive not movesd so i pay those taxes so far , that may change soon , |

Geez A Sq: That was a posting from:PuckDaddy (Joe Anidar) on his posting of 06 March 2025.(From what I could find)
You should have looked a little deeper for your own satisfaction. Everything he stated on that list - as well as Aluminum & a few other things - were NOT tariffed by Canada, & were actually catagorized as tariff free by CBSA under the MFN (Most Favoured Nation) designation. As well, the 2nd round of NAFTA / CUSMA was negotiated by Trump. It was HE that disctated what "tariffs" would be applied to dairy products. " Those tariffs only kick in after the U.S. surpasses the quantity it's permitted to sell in Canada tariff free - a number negotiated by the Trump administration in 2018 as part of CUSMA." " Unless or until you meet that threshold you do not pay" The U.S. has never reached the quota, which the U.S.dairy industry acknowledged earlier this month." During the negotiation of CUSMA, Canada agreed to increase over time the quota of U.S. products that can enter the market tariff free. What really drew my suspicion is that the majority of chicken sold here originates in USA.(There are processing differences that are applied ie: temperature of water during processing etc.) I worked for a poultry company and we had a "quota" for US chicken. As well, for the last 15 years I was importing food/spice products from the southern US for my own business. One has to be careful about the mis-information spread around the internet. |

If I could slightly change the topic to the tariffs on Chinese made goods President Trump's plan is working. China has signaled a willingness to discuss the trade imbalance and tariffs with President Trump if he first drops the tariffs on Chinese made goods. President Trump, being the canny negotiator he is has refused because he knows darn well the Chinese will drag out negotiations for years. President Trump holds the winning hand because the Chinese economy is crashing and factories are closing daily. This is another hammer blow to China's already fragile economy due to their mortgage crisis after several property developers such as Evergrande defaulted on their debts. 2023 saw a record 8 million Chinese citizens default on their mortgages and loans. Americans need to simply sit tight, take a little short term pain for long term gain and trust that President Trump knows exactly what he is doing.
