Shamu. I may be weird, but I prefer the 303 Calibre over the 308. I just think those L42's and 39's are so darn sexy looking!

Devizes have 4 L39's for sale at the moment. They range from 950 to 1250 pounds. Considering that they only made 1280 rifles. Good value when you compare to the L42!
They've just sold a 42 so price is not shown. They do have an Envoy for 3250 I believe.

Think I'll try and find some full wood furniture and a nice No4 Mk1 Sporter with the dog ear front sites still on and make a faux L42A1. As I questioned before about the hand guard barrel bans being two pieces, I wonder if I could cut the wood just at the band and make a new band guide in the wood about 1/2" from the cut? Thoughts?

Didn't they make the L39/42 stocks a bit shorter than the cut for the sling swivel of a No4? I vaguely remember reading something to that effect. IIRC it was something to do with barrel bedding & harmonics. Look at Zed's "family group", you can see the No1 & The L39 side by side in it. If the No1 & the No4 have the same length to the sling swivel band it should work? If so you could cut a No4 stock just at the back end of the cut for the band & then cut a new one just behind that. I'd get a No4 Mk2 with the hung trigger for the starter rifle & build up from that.

There was a cased L42A1 for sale at the recent Arms Fair at the Bisley Phoenix Meeting for a bargain price of £9,950 YES £'s.
Mind you on the same stand there was a No.8 cadet rifle for £3,000.

Having shot all four versions of the rifle, I believe that I am qualified to pass an opinion. As a shooter the L42A1 is poor value for money at current rates. It certainly has interest as a collector's piece but going prices are quite ridiculous! My favourite shooter is the Enforcer with its Pecar T/S. As target rifles there is little to choose between the Envoy and the L39A1, though I do favour the Envoy - better finish and furniture design more suited to target work. Best Value for money? Probably the L39.

Since my latest No4 Mk1 sporter aquisition although cheap, turned out to be a dud with a suspected worn barrel, I'll have to start from scratch. I'll keep my eyes open for an inexpensive sporter rifle with the military front sites then obatain some forearm and handguard furniture and barrel band. The dud rifle has a walnut cheek piece on the butt stock I added just after I got the rifle in a trade. Sounds like a good winter project.
