Those with Knowledge and are fluent in firearms please remember some of the guys are novices on here and need guidance. So be careful on what you tell them or how you tell them. And for the newbees please use caution and if in doubt please consult a gunsmith and or someone with knowledge of vintage milsurp firearms any firearms for that matter. And do not proceed unless you’re absolutely sure what your doing completely safe. And have all firearms checked by a competent gunsmith! |

Good point Cookie. The toys we play with go bang and can bite you if you abuse or mishandle them. When in doubt, seek professional help because "i read it on the Internet" probably won't cut it on the insurance form. It's nice to meet responsible firearms owners.

Time to concider a couple of things.
1: There are old reloaders & there are bold reloaders, but there are very few old, bold reloaders. 2: we should honor the Hippocratic Oath the same way doctors do. "First of all Do no harm!"

Small point: doctors no longer swear that oath it is now an unspoken guideline. Common sense helps a lot in this hobby. If you think something is dangerous, it probably is.

Oh, I'm not saying we should swear it, I don't think doctors ever did. Its just a good principal to adhere to.

I agree entirely with CM. And Black Ack speaks a lot of sense too all the old hands on here will remember the trouble we had with a so called expert from Gunboards mouthing off on here and what happened to him! It's easy to hide beind a pc screen and spout garbage but sooner or later it WILL catch up and then the hammer will drop assuming the person responsible hasn't blown their stupid head off.

I am reasonably new to reloading and appreciate the concerns mentioned by Cookie Monster. I tend to run new ideas past our shooting club president who is very experienced. Special care should be taken when buying older weapons that may be well used (maybe too well!) .
I bought my rifle from EFD rifles in the UK, because they only do Lee Enfield's, that way I knew I was getting a good quality rifle.
Why risk doing something you can only do wrong once! |

linking here , i recently bought a enferld made Pat 1853 front stuffer as part of my 'expansion' plan [thats how i am reducing the size of my collection don-cha-no ,
anyways , in researching it on a vintage rifle site i was asked if i had inspected it to see if it was loaded , apperantly this is a common thing with these , i had not ......
so i pulled the rod from beneath the barrel and stuffed it to the bottom , grasping it at the muzzle i withdrew it and laid it alongside the barrel , sure enough - bout 3" short of the breech block ,
short story long i removed a wad & lead projectile charge & part of another wad - not gotten to the powder yet as all seems to have set like concrete ,
i never would have imagined leaving a muzzle loader loaded , needless to say one can learn new things every day
