I agree Wolfie1 however if I had to choose one all around bullet wieght.............Ermm...Be a close decision between the 150 and 174gr. I would go with the 174 because the factory sights are calibrated for those all ready

If you can't stop it with a 174 grain soft nosed then you Yankees are breeding some heavyweight stock! Something the scientists have been working on behind closed doors maybe??

I suppose the Hornady 150gr Spire Point will do the job nicely on Black Bear and Mountain Lion. I'd prefer something a little harder hitting when one of them has an ugly attitude towards me though.Ermm

If you are using factory loaded ammo then the 150gr hornady loads have better ballistics on paper including energy at 300 yds. than the 180 Remington or winchester. Haven't checked federal. In fact the 150 gr hornady rivals a 180 gr standard load Remington 30-06 for velocity and energy.

Found that interesting. Obviously I'm not say the .303 can really compare with the 30-06, but a hot .303 can compare to a mild 30-06.

Tony, it's far better that the bear is the "recieving end" than whoever the bear "takes an interest" in. I just want to insure that outcome.

I asked my uncle, who served in Korea about which bullet he preferred in the 303.
I asked him if the 150 or the 180 was best, he said , the 180 of course.
I said , why, he said, more thump.
I thought that was all that needed to be said.

Just yesterday afternoon, I smacked my spring bushpig (Blackbear) with a 180 Sierra @ 143yds (laser ranged). In the through the 4th and 5th rib and out just ahead of the second last rib, tore up both lungs and ruptured the heart. The exit wound was about the size of a quarter.  The bear ran about 25ft and toppled over, tumbling 45-50yds down the mountain side.  I'll add pics later, working f**ked up shifts right now.

AFD Love to read a post on the Black Bear hunt when you find time.

Regarding bullet weight, I've had very good luck with the 174gr Hornaday Interlock round nose killing things and leaving big exit holes.  The round nose opens quickly and the interlock ring prevents over expansion.  Kills better than the sierra 180gr soft points I tried.  I've had expansion problems with that bullet.  I shot a buck head-on in the brisket and bullet broke the ofside hip.  Shooting the full lenght of a deer is too much penetration.  I've lost deer on broadside hits where no blood trail was created.

The Hornaday kills about the same as Remington Corelocks in 180 grain.

150's shoot only marginally flatter under 250 yards, so, I don't bother with them, where as the 174 gr Hornaday expands reliably and penetrates well.  Thus, I tend to stick with Reloader 15 and 174's.

It's a different topic, but I prefer round nose bullets for reliable expansion at 2400 fps and lower velosity you get with a medium heavy bullet in a 303.

My rifle likes the 150 grn projectiles. They group the best. 180 grn are acceptable but I am looking for sub MOA accuracy. I bought a box of 215 grn Woodlieghs. I did not like the accuracy afforded by those pills. For practice and grins I have been loading 174 grn SMK. Awesome pill for accuracy. Especially out to distance. For giggles my son and I were shooting out to 1200 meters just to see if we could. The SMK did not disappoint. Obviously we would not ethically hunt at those ranges. But 174 grn seems to perform very well. I am going to try out the 174 RN that Hornandy makes in .312 diameter. If I can get the same accuracy as the SMK then that is what I am going to use for AZ elk this year. I am confident that if I am within 500 meters, we got ourselves an elk. I will use 150 grn this year of deer and feral hogs. I may even take a look at the 125 grn pills available and try some of those if they are accurate.

Any thoughts?
