I have Hornady 150gr spire points for hunting, but I have wondered:
How effective is the 175gr Mk VII bullet on game?

Are you talking about the full metal jacketed projectiles??? if so FMJ projectiles were not made to for hunting in mind.
A hunting projectile is supposed to delever a good shock and bleed the animal if a vital is not hit at first...
A FMJ projectile is ment to take a human down with minimal colateral damage when it exits....

DO NOT TRY THIS! Using an Old VietNam trick taking about 1/16" off the tip and you have a bullet that will expand

The Mk VII bullet is designed to tumble violently on impact. The front third inside the jacket is aluminum, the rest is lead. It's long and tail heavy.

With far better options out there for hunting than the MkVII, I would have to ask why you'd choose it on purpose?

Be careful if you cut into the nose of an FMJ round of any type.
There are documented cases of the lead core blowing out in the bore & leaving just a mangled jacket behind.

The hollow point is for stability in flight NOT for hunting. As Rhino and Hoadie rightly say using them is both cruel and unethical. FMJ was and is made to conform to League of Nations now The Geneva Convention which stipulated the use of FMJ ammunition for military use. You hit an animal with an FMJ it can and will run possibly badly wounded and will die an agonising death. |

OK, Sorry I started a firestorm here.
I have no intention of hunting with Mk VII bullets.
I already mentioned I have Hornady soft points loaded for the purpose.
I was simply wondering how well Mk VII bullets would work "in a pinch" as it were.
I know military ammo was used in Africa, is there any record of Mk VII ammo used on game?

I think some heffalunk herds were culled with it back in the day.
Probably because penetration was so important.

SOFT NOSED AMUNITION WAS DESIGNED FOR A SPECIFIC PURPOSE.
TO PRODUCE HYDROSTATIC SHOCK MAXIMISE THE DAMAGE AND HUMANELY KILL THE QUARRY YOU ARE HUNTING. QUITE FRANKLY ANYBODY WHO USES FMJ /HOLLOWPOINT TARGET AMMO FOR SHOOTING IS 1 LEAVING THEMSELVES OPEN TO POSSIBLE PROSECUTION AND 2 MORE IMPORTANTLY LIKELY TO CAUSE PROBLEMS ON HERE DUE TO THE ANTI HUNTING AND SHOOTING LOBBY. USE THE AMMUNTION DESIGNED TO DO THE JOB AND DON'T LEAVE THE MEMBERS OF THE FORUM WIDE OPEN TO CRITICISM FOR UNETHICAL PRACTICES. |
