I recently had one passed down to me. I did research on it and serial numbers match and it looks in good shape. I noticed on the front left side of the receiver there is hole...when the bolt is open you see through it. When the bolt is closed, there is a partial opening. Does anyone know what that is? Thanks!

Its a gas vent hole to drop pressure in the event of a case head or primer gas leak.

I'm curious whats the "SS" referred to in the thread header? From your pic I think that's a Maltby-made rifle, those stamps in a circle are kind of an ROF Maltby signature & I don't recall them making any NO4 Mk1* rifles. Those were all Savage-Stevens or Long Branch items? I know it sounds nit-picking, but the Brit No-Mk (*) nomenclature can lead to some misunderstandings by reversing them! Can you post a pic showing the opposite side of the receiver showing the whole action & one of this side showing the same area so we can sort it out for you.

Shamu. The picture shown is of my Maltby and not the OP's rifle.
As a side note and I only learned of this recently but, Maltby did make a large batch of mis-stamped No4Mk1* rifles that were part of Operation Carpetbagger...

Many thanks to everyone. Mine is a Savage Stevens No4 Mk1* that was made in 1942 in MA. It has the US Property stamp. All the serial numbers match...bolt, receiver, barrel and magazine. I don't see any markings that it was refurbished or that it was imported. The stock finish is excellent and I'm wondering if it was ever refinished. No one in the family seems to know anything about it. Anyway, thanks again for the great help. Jim
