Why military ball should not be used for hunting:
Besides all the violations of law and regulation, my answer was in the tests with Mk VII ball all the time:
The bullets go off in unpredictable directions after impact.
You absolutely DONT want that if you're hunting. Aim for the heart, wind up missing the heart and rupturing the bladder instead; or just veering off somewhere else to leave the poor critter bleeding with a gory ruptured gut.

Any round can ricochet soft nosed or FMJ it's all in the placing of the bullet and making sure you have a decent backstop in case the bullet goes through the animal.

Hoadie, head shots waste less meat, ask my wife: she shot me in the head with a .38 Special after we were married less than a month!
Actually, a fragment of bullet flew back from the target, didn't even break the skin.
It is a lesson on shooting metal silouettes, DON'T DO IT!!
The club removed them all shortly after.

Steel targets for shooting should have a slight angle to deflect the bullet in the dirrection you want... a Buddy of mine has His target set to swing , kind of like a gong. and its angled to deflect the bullet into the ground....
I'm going to build all my new steel targets in this way....
I had some steel core 8 mm Mauser ammo. We stoped using it as the steel cores were riccocheting back at us....that was from the 3/4 inch plate pigs we normaly shoot.
I now set them at an angl when we shoot them and dont use steel core ammo on them either..

Use Aluminium sheets with the target painted on them. You can bash the holes closed with a mallet after you used them. No chance of a ricochet then.

Right you are Hoadie !!!! Good thing they had some of them carabeaners laying around down range...
Hoadie and I must of fixed that chane 3 or 4 times......
Spaeking of chains that would make a great back stop if you had enough to make a curtain . they would give enough to not ricochet the bullet..... We did some thing like that for archery in high school with a big blanket.. it would give enough to not let the arrow go throgh and it would fall to the floor....

I don't think he's talking about ricochets. He means the bullet can veer off in unpredictable directions within the body of the animal after impact.

I think that covers the bullet veering off within the body. Ignore the rantings of the Canadian Gnome he's got delusions of grandeur since he found out there's a place named after him in Alaska called Nome. |

Hoadie I hate to dissappoint you but, Fort George was named after King George III of England and the HMS King George V was launched on february the 21st 1939 which is before your time. Also the Battleship was named after King George V of the United Kingdom born in 1865 and died in 1936 who was known for his naval career.
